Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Of course you didn't say anything wrong :flowers: I took your question as a serious (and interesting) one, and was attempting to give a serious answer.

And I entirely agree with the rest of your...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Yes, that's exactly the problem. And if you have someone on board who is baking frequently, then this problem is greatly compounded.

I don't know about BBQ tanks, but I believe that they are the...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

I've done six full transits of the Baltic Sea and North Sea during the last three years, and can help you with any advice you might need about gas (or anything else).

The Swedish gas cylinders...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Sometimes that will work.

But some places it will not.

Between the UK and Finland, there are 10 countries and 7 (!) different standards of gas bottles. (Where the hell is the EU when you...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

A hint for you -- you can exchange your style of bottles in Estonia, and it's about 2x cheaper than in Finland. The 6.5kg bottles (IIRC) are common to the Estonian ones.

And in Sweden, for God...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

If you read the thread, you'll see.

You have x amount of battery power, and y amount of propane.

Can I boil water with electricity without running my batteries down? Someone said you're...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

As Sea Dreaming said in the post BEFORE this one, it's not about cost.

It's about efficiency based on scarce resources -- battery power, propane stores, in potentially remote places. The other...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Exactly.

The disposable cylinders are much more susceptible to leaks than normal cylinders. Fine on land, but really dangerous on a boat where the gas can't escape downward. The amount of gas...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Main propulsion powered by solar is not really feasible for a largish cruising boat. 700 liters of diesel fuel -- what I keep on board my boat --contains 7.8 megawatt/hours of heat energy, which can...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

It is definitely not good practice to use such things inside boats.

"Boat owners are advised to avoid using portable gas appliances with integral gas canisters on board boats"

Portable gas...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Pretty cool, but those little butane bottles are not really safe to use inside the boat.

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Induction is very cool because it gets more of the heat into the pan and less of it into the air. The issue is not conversion of electrical power to heat (which is an easy conversion and always 100%...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

If it's ridiculous, then why are you even here?

Boiling water to make hot drinks is one of the main galley functions on a cruising boat, especially in cold climates. Figuring out the best way to...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Actually most of them are more than 2kW.

Much better for use on board are the 1 liter, 800 watt to 1000 watt ones. Larger ones may take disproportionate charge out of your battery due to Peukert....

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Well, in those photos you're adding solar panels to an already existing windage problem. So I guess you are right to say that they're not causing windage problems, but none of that would be ok for...

This is thread drift, but it's interesting thread drift.

I think everyone knows the wonderful advantages of solar power. Had it on my last boat; it was terrific.

However, it has a few...

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Yes, it depends on where you are.

Over here diesel for non-propulsion purposes is 0.59 GBP per liter (about $2.70 per gallon).

Butane (we don't use propane much on boats) is 19 GBP for 4.5 kg....

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Indeed, but the question was not answered. In fact several people asked to define what was meant by efficiency.

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat

Because vapor cycle compressor systems (heat pumps) are MOVING heat, not making it. It looks like magic, getting 20kW of heat but only using 3kW of electrical power, but it's possible with a heat...
