Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
I think the main point here, a broader and more philosophical one, is that "self-sufficiency" is a fantasy. Or maybe even -- a pose. It smacks of -- hubris. Of course good seamanship demands... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Yes, I misread your post, and sorry for that. But still -- I think what you're recommending is to refuse SAR services in some cases, where they are provided now, just because someone does not have... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
I'm with Cadence. You are joking, right? A guy with his young family is sinking in a storm, calls the Coast Guard on the VHF, sends his position by DSC, asks for help, and you're saying that the CG... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
It's an old debate, and probably no right answer. I, personally, choose PLB over EPIRB, because unlike an EPIRB, I can keep the PLB on my person at all times. The really big drawback of the EPIRB... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
And me too. I can't count how many times I've been offshore in my callow youth with no weather report, and nothing but a compass, and I seem to recall one time even without that. I wouldn't do... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
This is false. Monohull sailboats with keels and "heavy ballast" pop back up if rolled by a wave. Rolling them practically never sinks them unless a hole is ripped out when the rig comes off. ... |
