Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Greetings Folks,

Thank you for the detailed explanations. So I'm understanding that within reason - current doesn't really matter as the battery will take whatever it wants to take, so I shouldn't...

Both good points, I'll relax a bit and see how these go!

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Got it. Settings fiddled, 14.8 bulk, 14.8 abs, 13.8 float.

Dumb question: the chargemaster changes from bulk to abs mode when abs voltage is reached. Us battery recommends bulk voltage of 14.8 but...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

OK, so the thing is that while I will be getting the batteries up to full now and then, it definitely won't be super-regular - I don't think I can regularly listed to the generator banging away for...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Greetings Folks,

Just thought I'd report back.

So the Chargemaster 12/100 is in. It runs very happily off the Honda EU20i. It happily puts out 102A and the Honda isn't even struggling.

In...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

OK, just finished the manual - looks like a very nice unit, easy to use, nice interface. Nice and compact too! Just missing output capacity - only 60A... and I can't find any stacking function. ...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

"C3 Series"? I thought this was the current version...

Will dig around and see what I find...

Having said that I would need to stack 2 and have current limiting if required, so if it doesn't do...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Bizarre... this is what I have in the manual (the heading is desulfation, there is no heading for equalization):

Desulfation Mode Defined (Flooded Lead Acid Only) - battery switch position - 8...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

ahah... easier said than done - I don't have "aft cabins"... I have quarterberths... and one is a seaberth, so empty, the other is "storage". ;) Having said that - the run to the battery bank is...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Wow, I really will have to stay clear of Xantrex then.

The only problem is - I can't find anything else that will do what I need that's relatively compact.

I need:

1. Battery equalization...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

I thought that might be the answer..

How much separation is enough? I can move the RC42 one metre away with no problems at all and it will still be on the centerline and below the WL, just above...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Another quick question - the location that I would ideally be fitting this is directly next to (30cm/1 foot away) my rate compass (Simrad RC42) which the AP uses. I can imagine that while charging,...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Thank God, anything under AUD1000 doesn't import duties, otherwise my refit would have never finished.

There is literally nothing available here at a reasonable price (but that's for another...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

OK, there's always a gotcha, equalization is automatic - it has to be in float mode for seven days first... and there's no manual way to start it... (or is there? there's nothing in the manual)

Oh wow, is this correct?

ProgressiveRC - IOTA DLS-220-45 Power Supply (https://www.progressiverc.com/iota-dls-220-45-power-supply.html)

Why on earth is it so cheap?!?!? I can buy 4 of these and...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Now that sounds very interesting indeed! Do you know if it's possible to mix-and-match - e.g. 55 and 45?

There's no current limiting option though is there? So maybe 45 x 2...

OK, now to check...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Wow... that bad then. :)

Actually, your numbers are very accurate, the alternators initially put out about 250A for about a minute, then ramp down to about 150A or so for a while and drop to...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

I was actually looking at the rebadged 60A one a littler earlier - I believe it's called the "Pronautic 1260". Nice form factor too. Only thing is that to start equalization, you need to remove the...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

I was just thinking in terms of efficiency and options down the road. I have 250A charging capacity on the engine, but understand the wear/tear associated and the lifecycle cost of an engine is WAY...

Re: Optimal Charging Regimen - Wet Cells

Actually there's a story behind the fridge... it's quite large, but the bottom is something like 12" insulation (purely due to hull geometry, wasn't intentional!), the side wall (hull side) is again...

Thank you for the link - some very interesting reading there!

OK, I'm a believer now, so have started looking for a charger to use with my Honda (2kw).

I was initially looking for an Iota...
