That definitely works with a good cable steering setup, but I can't say I've seen a hydraulic setup where that would work. There's usually too much drag in the helm pump, etc.

8 turns lock to lock is definitely excessive. I'd be inclined to throw a bigger sprocket on the wheel to cut that down to maybe 4 turns and you'll likely be much happier. My hydraulic steering is...
