Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

If the winds are gusty and a little shifty, the boat can definitely sail around more as it stretches out the nylon and then rebounds. But it usually takes a good bit of rope to cause that and you...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

For a color scheme, I came up with my own that's worked pretty well. It uses 3 colors: neon orange, neon green, and black. Paint on the chain, spray on fabric dye / paint for the rope portion.

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

I agree that length of boat is irrelevant. In my mind, for a mixed rode, minimum chain length should be a bit more than the deepest water you expect to anchor in. That way you've already...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

I agree. I was going more for the point that 200 feet isn't "barely enough in shallow water". It's not enough to go anywhere and everywhere, but there are plenty of cruising areas where 200 feet...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

It wouldn't hurt to add some line for that trip. 300 feet will probably be enough to cover anywhere you need to be, but having a bit more (even an extra 100 feet) may give you more options. For an...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

10:1 scope is a heck of a lot. With the same 5 ft to the roller, I'd treat 200 ft as plenty for 35 feet of water under most conditions (5:1 scope). And you could go as far as 7:1 scope in up to...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

In my mind, if you're pulling mixed rope / chain in a windlass, you need as much chain as the bottom conditions in your cruising grounds require OR somewhat more than the depth of deepest water you...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

As far as I know, most do. And an anchor can be useful in longer races where a period of adverse wind and current conditions could lead to losing ground, so it's advantageous to drop an anchor and...

Re: Anchor Chain vs rope!

That's an unusually small amount of chain for the size of the boat. All chain is common as it eliminates concerns for chafing on rocks, coral, etc. on the bottom. But depending on where you travel,...
