Going back to the OP's question about talking to near by boats. This summer I sailed to Bermuda and used my ssb for email, weather reports and faxes, as well as talking to shore and boat based nets.... |

The Kenwood you are looking at is VHF just like the marine one just different frequencies and lower power. Also not many boats carry that type of ham radio so you are not likely to make any contacts... |
