Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

I also forgot to mention that the design of the sail is a factor too when it comes to twist. large roach or square heads will twist more with more corresponding vang load required.

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

I forgot to mention with a device like the Camber Spar, Hoyt boom, or dangly pole or whisker pole, sailing angles can be even more possible and productive than with a conventional jib and main.

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

To answer your question about the loads without traveler. I would say if the boom and mast wasn't specifically engineered to take the extra load, you would want to continue to use traveler and...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

For a conventional rigid vang, ideally the boom would be at a height where you could have a 30- 45 degree angle at the boom with the attachment point on the boom at about 30%. Less than 30% and 45...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Polars initially are calculated on design data and with established racing boats based off of real data and refined over time sailing. I would say the polars for most cruising cats are not accurate...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

P.S. forgot to mention all of those boats had chafe covers on the shrouds and I never had a problem with sail chafe with the sail all over the shrouds, I do believe however that the vang helped in...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Frankly as a manufacturer I can tell you that installing a rigid vang with mechanical advantage led to the cockpit, with the necessary stronger boom, is more expensive than a traveler and that is...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Please don't misunderstand me though, I advocate for most cruisers sailing the rumbline is the way to go, just a lot easier and safer and less potential to make a windshift mistake. That is why I...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

In ANY monohull racing NO ONE sails dead downwind and ignores the polars with any hope of winning a race, particularly with asymmetricals on a bow sprit. Since cruising cats laden with gear are in...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Lots of cruising cats come standard with a vang. Voyage, Manta, St. Francis, Yapluka, Endeavour, Tag, etc. 99% of the cruising cats I have seen without a vang would benefit from one since the...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Well I assumed we were talking about wing on wing or spinnakers of course, Dave doesn't believe whisker poles are needed either though. As for jib and main, you would have to sail higher angles to...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Sorry Dave, I totally disagree, I raced monohulls as well as cats for 35 years, higher performance cats benefit greatly, however the heaviest displacements monohulls that I have raced benefit too...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

When sailing downwind, cruising cats are not much different than most mono hulls , they can and do benefit sailing angles downwind with better VMG up to a certain point of wind velocity which is...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

A solid vang will give you the same result with a lot less hassle and infinitely more adjustment when it comes to twist.
