My Yanmar 4JH4 has dip stick holes on both sides of the engine. One has the dip stick, the other was plugged.

Apparently this is fairly common. Look closely at your engine and the parts manual....

There are a couple of mfgrs like this.

Poke around and you will find more.

We dont recall my make.

You need to find out what thread is on your engine. Which ever one I used had a look up...

I am skeptical of this. I agree it would work PROVIDED you can get ALL of your oil out of the engine. I am not at all sure that we do manage that on a regular basis. I would bet most engines are...

On the oil filter when I tried to find a cross reference I was told (here on CF) that Yanmar filters have some internal pressure bypass. Damed if I know that is...

Just fine thank you. We have put 2,000 hours on the engine in the past decade. she had 672 hours when we bought her, just turned 2,700. Control panel fell apart, am replacing that now.

This is an old, old issue that has been addressed several times before.

I do not know if it is specific to Yanmars, but Yanmar owners have posted on this before.

Yanmar 4JH4 with similar issues.

My sense is that small changes in pressure result in distortions. Maddening.

Roughly what I do is:
Remove dipstick and wipe it off
Wait like 30 seconds...
