Update: sailed in 30 knot winds with a reefer main and a partially furled Genoa. Makes a big difference in the handling of the boat. At 12 knots no problem upwind or down wind but in 20 knot gusts...

Not sure about the turn on the wheel. Wheel is marked dead center. Have not tried on a port tack but will this weekend. Wanted to go about 45 degrees downwind but it would not even go 5. ...

Reefing looks like a common answer. Gonna go out next windy day reefed and see if it works!
