If you could sketch a wiring diagram of what you have found, it would be helpful. In 30 years there is no telling what someone may have juryrigged?

An isolation transformer is just that. It can be step up, step down or a tapped transformer to be buck boost. At any rate it allows your vessel ground to be isolated from the marina ground.

Looks like it could be a rheostat? Usage also? Given the world wide vocabulary
differences, if by alternator you mean stand alone generator it could be for rheostat used to adjust the field windings...
