If you could sketch a wiring diagram of what you have found, it would be helpful. In 30 years there is no telling what someone may have juryrigged? |

Looks like it could be a rheostat? Usage also? Given the world wide vocabulary differences, if by alternator you mean stand alone generator it could be for rheostat used to adjust the field windings... |
