Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Why can't someone take a big orange float and tie it to the boat?

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

"Who the hell leaves on ANY extended trip with only $90?"

Let's be fair; they were on a short sail to anchor for the night. They say their plans were to sail to Key West and work for a while to...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

It appears to me that the current mishap was caused by the captain seeing that the #3 Green marker was not in line with the other Greens, was not on the port side of the cut, and there was no Red...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Active captain and Navionics compiling submitted sonar plot data is good, but why aren't the primary NOAA map makers doing this?

>Marine navigation has not evolved very much further than 1850 Mississippi river pilotage.<

" Gad my man..where do you get ideas like this... "

Well, fer instance, without "local knowledge" ...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

It would seem so. I am studying marine navigation in finer detail. Trouble is, my navigation skills migrate from aviation, where nav data is pretty much single source, much more trustworthy, and...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

And when these fragmentary, unofficial sources disagree, who do you believe?

I rest my case. US marine navigation is a mess.

"It is reported that as of March 2017 the pass is shoaling in from the north approaching from the Gulf of Mexico (https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/gulf%20of%20mexico.html). Currently, the G3...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Would any inlet features not accurately depicted on the chart be a Notice to Mariners?

In aviation, there is often an ATIS at the airport - a low-vhf broadcast of current conditions and...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

OK, so I gather there is no straightforward way to tell if local knowledge is required. So, can I assume that anytime the water is thin relative to one's draft, it falls into this category?

Exactly where on the chart in question does it say this?

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

(not nearly as experienced in marine navigation as most here)

I thought that in "approach" areas with relatively shallow depths, spot depths were just approximate, where channels were supposed...

Where are you seeing this? Aside from note G, I see no other detail on chart 11411.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

I still think many here are confusing the two different issues;

1. Yes, they made a mistake in attempting the difficult channel entrance in poor conditions. 2. BUT perhaps they thought the worst...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

The chart is very confusing for a channel with 4 feet controlling depth (note G)

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

As close inshore as the wreck is, and as densely populated as the area is, seems like some locals would have snorkeled it by now to see what happened.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Looking at the after impact photo on their gofundme page, they were flooding, but upright.

Could this have been a simple holing and flooding? Perhaps the hole was not accessible?

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

It seems we're confusing two issues here. Regardless of their bad decision to enter the difficult pass under poor conditions, it's not at all uncommon to ground in the sand in Florida. They...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

And note "G" says the controlling depth is 4 feet outside the bridge.

How can a sailboat navigate that except at high tide in calm water, let alone at night in fog?
