Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

You are right, sorry for that.

I would not trust a device with that label printed on either.
Maybe it is worth thinking about it...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

cmon, dont you see it. It is an ULTRA HIGH EFFICIENCY ENERGY STATE TAPER... CONTROLLER, you can't beat that with a PWM or MPPT, not if you want ultra high efficiency energy state.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

well, there are 2 questions to be answered.

1. why is the voltage that low. Any loads left on that drain the battery?

2. Why there is no charge current from solar, you have 2 independent solar...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

No problem. It's a complex matter. I agree, it's technically a current source. The I/U diagrams related to radiation intensity shows this quite impressivly, while the current is almost proportional...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

... the usual scam ... Some seller even do not know what MPP means, they think its a quality label like a CE Certificate or ISO9001 label...

You'll find it out very easy with a look at the data...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

PWM controller do not care about MPP, they act as a shortcut between panel and battery, until the absorption voltage is reached, and then start to pulse to reduce power and prevent overcharging /...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

This is BS. 1st, a solar panel is a nonliner device regarding resistance, where do you get the 375V from? The Voc is 20V, the Isc is 3A, both points in the curve are not usable for resistance...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

To be precise, its the battery voltage, that controls the current.

The current is driven by the voltage difference of the charger and the battery. assume the voltage of the battery is 12V, and the...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

I have not objected what you said, just tried to clarify, explain it how it is done in the circuits of the controler.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

The controller is called controller, because it controls the charging, it does so by simply regulating the Voltage either linear in old conntrollers, also by some MPPT, or by controlling the...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

It is the controller, that disconnects the panel and causes the Voltage to rise to Voc.
It does it hunderts of times per second, thats why it is called PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION), your voltmeter...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

you will overcharge / boil the battery, the voltage Vmp, Voc are too high to connect the panel and not watching the voltage permanently.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

Paul, I am happy, you manage that many years without serios accidents.

anyway, many of your advices are bordrline. It is a bad thing to overcharge batteries, espeacialy SMF, GEL, AGM... They simly...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

do it parallel, less fuss with shading and current wise non matching panels.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

it is not unit is not uncommon with solar panels, cells are huge and tiny fractures can cut part of the area of a cell, the remaining part still outputs some current. Cells are in series, so if one...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

I would say panel 1,3 and 4 are ok, Isc is whithin the specs, panel 2 is dead, possibly a dead cell / hotspot.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

Voc AND Isc will be enough to sort out panel problems AND pair the right panels to strings - if desired (chose for a pair panels with equal or similar Isc). If the values are too different, use all...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

As I said before, measure the current. Panels connected to a battery, especially small ones to a big bank do not do much to the Voltage, you can sit for hours until there is a small change.

You...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

No, they are not, better to measure Isc.

even damaged cells can output Uoc, but the current they output in the circuit is near zero. same for batteries, generators, alternators etc. Power sources...

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

Its an MPPT controller, Voltages dont match there. You must test both, Voc AND Isc to tell, if the panel is ok, Voc alone is not sufficient for evaluations.

Re: Troubleshooting solar setup... or troubleshooting my troubleshooting!!

first of all, test EACH PANEL ALONE.

measure Voc AND Isc for each panel, write the results down.

Then hook one at a time to the controller and the controller to a battery, put at least as much...
