I used to teach my scuba students that they should never dive a beach where surfers were surfing. Maybe the same rule should apply to sailboats: never transiting a bar that's being actively surfed.

This may be because you're sailing the wrong side of the continent.

In my home waters on the windward side of North America, if you're in the ocean, you're off a lee shore 19 days out of 20.
