Sounds like the anticavitation plate being level with the hull and vacuum created by the prop could be pulling more air down what essentially is a tunnel. I still think it should be below the hull.

A buddy of mine was world champion racing these things (photo) I learned about outboards from him. The anti-cavitation plate is supposed to be 1 to 1.5" below the hull. Any higher and you increase...

I agree, worth pursuing but that does not solve the motor not fitting.

There are many variations of that aftermarket plate in different shapes and sizes. They are actually called "anti-cavitation" plates as they help reduce the air being sucked in. I'd suggest as a...
