Re: Wharram Thoughts
[QUOTE=bdgWesternMass;3480253]Before calling it absurd one should consider why any knot with rope holds. Ask what is the minimal number of wraps/lashes need to happen before a know is secure. If... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
The suggestion that the wrappings provide "redundancy" is absurd, though it seems highly unlikely that a strand would break on a properly done lashing. One broken strand renders the entire lashing... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Jim: It was not an LAR keel that fell off, but an anti vortex panel, and Pete then installed the LAR keels...... You will see that if you reread. The AV panel is a small triangular... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
I sure missed that one ;-) I thought I knew Bernd's designs fairly well but the Manta at 42 feet is above my "interest range". I love his philosophy of simplicity and ease of construction,... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
My guess is that it is one of the highly modified Woods Mira catamarans It has the right bows and stern, and appears about the right size. It was a very early Richard Woods design from shortly after... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
They did a beautiful job on it........... BUT..... they killed bridge deck clearance in pursuit of standing headroom........ that could be a significant liability....... pounding. ... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Interesting....... It clearly is not intended to be a full weather enclosure... looks like a compromise to accommodate the independent hulls. In rough conditions, seawater would still sluice... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
I'm looking at cost............ What can I get for the money. Every dollar I spend on the boat is a dollar I do not have in my cruising kitty, and voyaging is what it's about, not competing with... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
The boat has that general simplicity you mention......... and I'm 100% for that. Lashings offer only one thing....... demountability. They definitely are NOT simpler or lower maintenance... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Great Stuff........ What a project!! I can't imagine doing what they did with what they started with..... at least they knew the boat, having built it originally. ... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Half full or half empty? I see Wharrams as a boat with "potential".... If we look at catamarans X, Y, and Z, .............And I won't name names, as it will piss owners off.... There is no room to... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Is there a good reason for lashed rudders? A great low tech system, I've used this exact system in other structures that need to articulate. The key of course is to have the lashings spread along... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
"Improvement" is a loaded word here.......... Starting from a Wharram, there are lots of directions to go for "improvement". They all involve compromising somewhere. A low profile... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Strong words ;-) While Pete's boat clearly is a ground up design, I don't know how a Wharram that has been rigidized and a cabin add is no longer a Wharram, though I'm sure James would... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Over on Cheap Multi's and Projects is a 40' Wharram made rigid, with a full bridge deck cabin that spans the hulls. Note that it really offers no more windage than a separate pod, as it is no... |

Re: Wharram Thoughts
Changing the "design ethos"???? Spoken like a true Wharram Acolyte. Again, lashed beams add NOTHING of value...... It's merely an attempt to hold true to ancient technology, and has the sole... |
