Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
This would suggest an internal impedance of about 130 milli-ohm over the remaining 5 internal cells - which is ridiculously high. While the failed battery would be in rapid charge mode and internal... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
So I think I was clear that this has not happened on my boat. I have talked to two people that have seen it. One an owner - one a technician who resolved one. In both cases the scenario was actually... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
This is amusing but I can't remember if anyone actually answered your question... To use the batteries you suggest you will need 6 of the 450Ahr batteries. They will need to be configured in... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Rod my concern is your level of confidence in your position - which in fairness several posters have issue with. I challenge to you refute the science in my last post. I agree that the parallel... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Some science - weak batteries typically have higher internal resistance. In parallel - most of the charging current goes to the strongest batteries. In series voltage across weakest battery is... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Condescending means dismissing the opinions of others with sarcasm. Your experience and opinions differ. That is the sum of it. |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Guess that you're stressed at the coffee shop - but your comments are a bit condensing. We are not stupid. We just have a different opinion. There are trade-offs for any configuration. BTW -... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Actually the remaining non-shorted cells contribute 10v of emf to the circuit - the actually power dissipation is 200 watts plus whatever your charging system is throwing at it. Bad time to connect... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
I wonder if you have ever been on a multi-day passage. On the open ocean one acquires all sorts of "irrational phobias". I'm happy to admit this but I expect to live longer by showing respect for... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
I have seen otherwise. I do not consider trusting my life to the internal resistance of my batteries a good life choice. |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
With two batteries in parallel - one with a shorted cell - say one at 12v one at 10v - the battery with the higher voltage will provide full current in an attempt to bring two batteries to 12v. The... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
This statement is false. The biggest risk of melt-down, explosion or potential fire, occur from rapid discharge. Rapid discharge is more likely when batteries are connected in parallel. ... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con
I don't want to get into a piss fest - but it's interesting than an article that I wrote for Good Old Boat was turned down because they no longer want to publish advice on battery configuration... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Agreed - ABYC recommends each battery bank be protected by a fuse or breaker. I have 200 amp breakers. I have been entertained by the battle on this tread - but find it odd that people can be so... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con
No one is advocating leaving shore without at least two fully redundant banks. But individual cells within a 12v or 6v battery can and do occasionally short. Given that a 12v battery is just six 2v... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
I have only heard of one - single cell short in a 12v battery. It is not common but catastrophic. Why take the risk when two 200Ahr 6volts are cheaper than two 100Ahr 12volts? Should be an easy... |

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)
Series is ALWAYS safer than parallel for this reason. In a parallel configuration - one shorted cell can cause battery explosion or worse. In my boat my two series banks are only in parallel for an... |
