Re: Paper charts now unnessary
And that my friend is the essence of navigation. My primary nav tool is my eyes, when I look at the horizon (or up at the stars). I compare it with my primary backup which is my compass. Then I use... |

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

Re: Paper charts now unnessary
I would say this is exactly what is going on- as I watch other people sail their boats and watch others sail mine. And its scarier than that. They are navigating without knowing why it is dangerous... |

Re: Paper charts now unnessary
Very well said. If you were on this coast, I would buy you your favorite beverage. Some skills pass directly from the cyber world to ours, approaching a reef bound shore is something I would want to... |

Re: Paper charts now unnessary
I trust eyes first, compass or visual fix next, and then I am greatly relieved when a plotter or chart agrees with me. I am not going over the breakers just because there is enough depth by adding... |

Re: Paper charts now unnessary
OK hyperbole aside, I am deeply concerned that the current generation of sailors are totally dependent on GPS for navigation. The argument stated earlier that with GPS down, our paper charts are just... |

Re: Paper charts now unnessary
You know, if I could get someone to simulate current sea state at a given location ( taking info from the NOAA buoys) I could go sailing from from my laptop and I would put a chartplotter right at my... |
