Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

So today we went for a two hour afternoon sail - our second sail ever on our own boat.

According two two different gps readings, we motored around 4 knots, into the wind, with 1-2 foot chop in the...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

Maybe I just don't know what 4 to 5 knots feels like since I've never been on a boat that moved that slowly.

Today while I was on board, my dock-neighbor showed up and said "are you the owner...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

Lots of good points raised, so thank you guys very much.

We are preparing for a trip to St. Maarten for a week, so when I get back I'm going to put it up on the hard and have the entire drive...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

I was. However, more than one boat passed me. Everything from a boat my size, to 40 something foots. It probably took 10 minutes or better just to get from under the bridge to the first marker.

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

I don't have a tach. I've been looking for instructions on how to install one, but I'm coming up empty handed. If I can't figure out how to install it on my own, it will be a few months before I can...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

Interesting! this post (https://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?threads/sailing-in-neutral-or-gear.141441/#post-922639) describes the same thing I was hearing. And when I was hearing it, we were...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

I don't know, that's why I'm seeking information.

Would a loose cutlass bearing allow the prop to turn? Does the prop normally turn when its in neutral? If the prop wasn't turning, the engine...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

Sorry for the typo.

So the boat was in neutral. We turned the boat to head back to the marina, so we were down wind. The waves were rolling in behind us, stern to bow. Either the waves, or the...

Re: How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

The prop was just scraped when I hauled it out two weeks ago. This is what it looked like before.

I know sailboats are slow, but when I'm being passed by other boats my size, its starting to...

How Fast Does Your Boat Motor?

I asked this on SailboatOwners, but thought I'd post here as well.

I've got a 1980 27' with a Yanmar 1gm10 in it, and it motors extremely slow.

We took it out yesterday for its first test...
