I've thought about buying the boat sooner where we live, in the SF Bay Area, so I can sail it for a year before ARC, but used 40' boats are about a third cheaper in Florida or the...

That's a great story, Ramblingman. I started out looking at big boats, too, and kept getting smaller. ARC has a minimum length requirement of 40', so now I'm working my way up, instead of down.

I have a three-fer (!) window of opportunity: I'm 57, I have time and money for 2018, and I have three teens game for an adventure.

Thanks, Ann, but my OP says we're starting sailing classes next month, 18 months ahead of the January 2018 World ARC Caribbean departure date. LOTS of classes, chartering, crewing, etc. 90 days was...

Makes sense. I'll plan closer to $2,000 and should probably have another stash for repairs underway.

Thanks, seasick, I appreciate the ideas.

As of today, the World ARC costs about $33,000 in fees to them. I may spend $50,000 with that and other trip expenses during the 15 month circumnavigation....

I appreciate the ideas. I've looked at chartering as a 5-7 day expensive adventure, but I can always day charter on increasingly larger boats up and down the California coast.

Next month three family members are taking a five-day basic sailing class with many more classes to come. Over the next 18 months, which do you recommend as the better prep plan, buying a 25-30 ft....
