Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
Hi Ross, The VCC pin outputs 3.3 or 5V, selected by a switch inside the unit. Both should work whether power is provided from USB or the NMEA connector. Make sure that the WiFi module is... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
As Dan stated, it's mainly due to the size of SO-239 panel mount connectors. I did go with BNC and SMA because adapters to these are readily available for virtually any RF standard. I just checked... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
Thanks! :thumb: Are you talking about some kind of virtual station that creates one AIS stream for a larger area? I know of government services like in Norway... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
I released a new firmware update for the single-channel dAISy: https://github.com/astuder/dAISy/tree/master/Firmware This update is of special interest because it overcomes some of the handicap ... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
I'm not sure if Mattkab is still active on this forum, but I wanted to point out his latest blog post. It's an easy to follow recipe to setup an inexpensive chartplotter with OpenCPN, a Raspberry Pi... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
Not a stupid question at all. There are two reasons for the warning: USB and NMEA side are not isolated. Powering from both sides at the same time may work but could cause ground loops and... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
With the help of muttnik, I came up with the following udev rule that starts or restarts Kplex when dAISy is plugged into USB: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="16d0", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0b03",... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
There was a question about the dAISy HAT from rgleason on another thread: The Raspberry Pi can't be connected to a PC via USB directly. Most people set up the RPi as a NMEA server and make AIS... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
I just received the first batch of assembled boards. It will take a week or two until the documentation is good enough for putting it up for sale on Tindie. But drop me a message if you want to get... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
That's a good write-up, should work even for Linux n00bs like myself :-) Coincidentally, I'm currently working on a 2-channel receiver in the form factor of a Raspberry Pi HAT. ... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
The RS-422 driver consumes about 235mW, which is basically the difference when powered from the USB side. When powered from 12V, the DC/DC converter is only about 80% efficient at that low... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
Here we go, a NMEA 0183/RS-422 add-on screwing to the back of dAISy: https://www.adrianstuder.com/daisy/NMEA_output2.jpg I also added a DC/DC converter to power dAISy from 12V (or more, the... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
For those playing along at home, the circuit below makes the auxiliary serial output of dAISy usable for at least some NMEA 0183 devices. It was successfully tested with a vYacht WiFi router and a... |

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver
@travellerw no worries @aedanc reporting back on how your experiment with the Garmin goes would be great. Make sure to hook dAISy only to inputs, otherwise you might fry it. Connect dAISy TX to +... |
