You can leave an HF receiver/mobile phone combo on all the time. It will consume less than 0.5A combined. If you want a higher quality/cleaner image then you can fire up your HF transceiver. Mine...

I use HF Fax on an Android phone. It works like a charm, the phone uses very little current. The idea of firing up a laptop to receive a weather fax seems wasteful to me. With the phone (or tablet)...
