Off of Sarasota it's charted as 20-25 fathoms so 120 to 150 feet 37nm out. Why do you ask?

Just out of curiosity how do you know the boat was unseaworthy, the family was destitute, and that he was any worse at forecasting weather than anyone else (including the meteorologists)? I'm not...

Pretty messed up way to look at the subject but I've often thought that in the event of it I might opt to not even bother with a life jacket. This is assuming my dinghy, radio, and EPIRB are not...

Agree with the majority of that but bear in mind that even if the wx looks good it can and will change once you toss off the lines - if you don't have a VHF and/or EPIRB/PLB don't chance it period....

Very sad set of circumstances.. Hopefully some good will come of it; maybe someone considering going offshore in a similar vessel will read about this tragedy, rethink their plans, and prevent...
