That article is very clear, and I recommend it also. However there is one glaring omission, in the list of Charge Management Devices. For some reason the author did not include a FET battery...

The original owner had the batteries incorrectly connected if he wanted to use the switch. Right now the switch is doing nothing at all, if wired as you say. Sounds like you already know that.
