Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I thought the more interesting part was the sailors were keeping a close eye on the weather and they let their cat turn turtle. How quickly things turn.

I was on an inland lake on a calm day when...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I see new EPRIB's selling for $300 - $600. But also count 19 offerings in Cat 1 and Cat 2 with some advertised as class 2. I will research what all this means for sure but can see it is not easy to...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

This law does not make any locating device mandatory. I guess it will help a little for a few boaters. It is a tiny step in the right direction.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Wow...that is shallow water. Maybe someday some one will find something.

Just asking because if the boat did sink in a few thosand feet of water I would say zero chance of ever finding anything....

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

How deep is the water 37 miles out? Just north of there 37 miles equal 37 feet. Just wondering.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Very sad that they got blown further out into the GOM and not closer to shore where it would be easier to find them. Weekend boat activity along the coast probably could have found them...but not 30...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Just did some reading on surviving in the open ocean. If you are in really warm water you can last 3 or maybe 4 days. If the water is not really warm hypothermia will get you in 6 -;10 hours. If in...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I did watch the tether test video on this thread. I will make sure a tether is short enough that I do not have a chance to go over the side. The boat going 7 knots dragging a tethered body is a sure...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

If you fall off your boat with a life jacket on and in the GOM in June how long can you last?

What would reduce your chances the most. Hypothermia, sharks, dehydration, or still drowning.
I have...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Yikes...seven people in a really small boat not meant for the ocean. I have a 15' boat the capacity plate says 6 people or 900 lbs. My boat is a different boat if I have 2 people vs 4 people. With 7...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

What equipment do you need to receive these signals? Like if I were out there helping in a search.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Pretty much water and people mix and don't mix. I am sure everyone here has heard of people that can swim, jump into the water but then do not surface. Usually from a house boat after they were...

Yes...the CG has called off their search. I still an holding to a glitter of hope that the weekend boating traffic will bump into a teenage boy holding into a cooler.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

With additional weekend boating activity I am hoping the odds of finding someone alive has increased. I know north of there boating activity really increases on the weekends.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

The flare - I thought I saw a pic of some of the recovered items from the boat. One of those items was a spent flare I thought. Now I can not find that pic.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I am still not on the bad judgement band wagon. As a human our decision making has a desired outcome. We see this outcome that we want as coming true. It is called 'hope'.

Human decision making...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I have driven with bad tires, I got lucky and did not kill anyone nor did I die.

I have driven drunk twice, I got lucky and did not kill anyone nor did I did.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Yes, so sad. And one issue I, myself have is how easy it is to go MOB on this size of sailing vessel. I wonder myself how in the heck I would stay on.
