The drive unit that I currently have has a control board inside connected to the external control unit and two power leads connected to the control board inside the drive.
What I would like to know...

Thaks GWB,

The one I own is the original linear drive unit type I for Autohelm-5000. It has a circuit board inside to translate the signal from the control unit, but the circuit board doesn't...

Reading your posts a question came to me. If I have undestood correcly, new drive units don't need a circuit board to work, but the connections (12v) for motor and clutch.
My old Raymarine Autohelm...
