Re: Capsize Ratio's

Glad you made it through in one piece, but I would have to disagree that structural damage is inevitable or even likely in these conditions. What kind of a boat?

I have been in similar (for a...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Well, Ted Turner and John Roissmaniere (sp?) were both in the mix in Fastnet 79. It may have been a mixed bag, but with racers of that calber one can assume the "amateurs" in the field were not so...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I highly doubt that. Fastnet and Sydney to Hobart typically bring out very top-notch offshore racers. This isn't Wednesday evening round the beer cans stuff.

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Absolutely, the wait seems even longer from down below when you can't see what's going on! :(

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I was forced - due to a damaged rig - to essentially "button up and go below" in survival conditions. This was after hours of exhausting work with drogue, active steering and bare poles (due to the...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I know what you're saying. There was also some "hum" about crews prematurely abandoning their still-floating yachts. I'm just pointing out that design does make a difference -- we can all think of...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Agreed about offshore passage, etc., but not the part about atheists in foxholes. There are plenty. Please see: Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

But in the Fastnet disaster, as I recall, the IOR-influenced boats themselves came in for plenty of criticism in the post mortem, leading to a major reassessment of many of those designs.

The...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I'd say, then, that you and your better half represent one of those outliers I was talking about.

I'm also guessing that pulling out all the stops like you're talking about tends to be relatively...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Either way, the result is the same: Mom & pop dial it back, thus diminishing the advantages of the faster boat.

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Does it always deduct? I think it matters where the stuff is - yes, a lot of it is going to be above the waterline, but at least fuel/fresh water tanks often are below the waterline (my 90-gallon H20...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I agree that the numbers are not the whole story and can be misleading. Unfortunately, without them, the only thing we have to go on is subjective - and few of us (myself included) really have enough...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

In ideal conditions, that might be true. In any kind of a slop, especially on a beat, probably not. Regardless of how much ballast there is below, a light displacement boat is more likely to pound...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Fair enough. I see your point. For the record, I am the guy on any daysail or cruise that is annoying the hell out of everyone else because I am constantly tweaking things instead of saying "well,...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I'm not buying this. I have raced and cruised. There is a huge difference in how much the crew is willing to put into the effort day in and day out that has little to do with design and a lot to do...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I think it's a pendulum and that the pendulum had swung dangerously against offshore safety by the time of the Fastnet '79 race.

As we know, the IOR rules of that era heavily influenced the "in...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

I'm not trying to pull rank here, but I actually have some relevant experience. I tripped on a very large breaking wave in a modified full keel boat (a Taipan 28 in a typhoon in the S. China Sea). I...
