How's 2,200 miles with the genoa poled out. You've got plenty of time to set up the pole when cruising. Chafe is an issue on the headsail sheet in the pole jaws. With the pole fixed in position...

Hard to see how you could stabilize the pole without a lift. Have set mine up with a topping lift, fore and after guys so pole is stabilized with a 3 point system. Set the pole up with the sail...
