I will have to investigate if the ATF I'm using is suitable for PTFE tape I would usually use for this. But I still like the idea of tapping the existing plug instead of replacing it entirely.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I believe I could manage that and I have the right lathe. It's an interesting idea and 1/4" NPT is quite doable. Gives me the best of both worlds, really, and leaves...

Thanks for that link! It will come in handy. To answer your question, yes, it is likely a metric thread and does feature an O-ring. Of course I have a 21 mm socket but not a 22 mm!
