Just been looking at traffic in Gulf of Aden... quite a few un-named warships on AIS and also.... ships which have... under 'destination'.. 'Armed guard aboard'.

I have just had a looksee at Bass Strait ... pretty much all terrestrial are 2 to 3 minutes. Long delay often means station has shut down after arrival etc.
Found an interesting one up by Lakes...

these new AIS-Sarts only transmit at 1W and the antennas are that short I reckon they would be near omni-directional...

I would venture that 99% of the ships that are being reliably received by the sats have bog standard vertical AIS ants...

Why don't your parents just buy an ordinary VHF ant. Mine is a basic GME...

OK...somebody had to be the bunny....
Just signed up for the 14 free trial.... had a looksee and then cancelled...you wouldn't want to forget to cancel...after 14 days it automatically takes...

Back in Feb the only position reports I was giving to the world at large was via Yotreps.

However half way between NZ and Chile the Chilean MRCC emailed me via Sailmail ( they would already have...

I thought I would check it out with a 30 day free trial of Premium...however.... premium doesn't give you the sat details... you need the all bells and whistles one to get that at $365 a month...
