You are confusing 'mode' with 'band'.

Mode is , for simplicity's sake, AM ( Amplitude Modulation) or SSB ( Single Side Band).

Everything on Medium Wave (720 to 1610) is AM.

On Short Wave...

I've just been looking at the manual...again... not too many buttons to mess up.... to hear people talking .... BBC, RCI, ordinary radio stations on short wave ....the only things you have to make...

Inside the radio there is a ferrite bar... ie a steel stick thingo.... with windings around it.... that is the AM Medium Wave antenna... its a bit directional and if, as suggested before, you start...

When you do start trying the SSB bit that site mentioned by Transmitter Dan USCG HF Voice (https://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/hfvoice.htm) would be a good resource.... remember to tune 1.9 below the...

A couple of points.... changing it from 9kHz to 10 kHz is for the Medium Wave section...up to about 1600 kHz.... your local AM stations.
Above that, within the broadcast band, the tuning step should...

Are you in a decent location? Marinas can be very noisy...
Try AM first... a simple one to look for is the WWV time signals on5, 10, and 15 Mhz.
Set the local/dx switch to DX
Attach a long wire...
