I think there will always be demand for paper, not as much as before, but still a demand.
There are no plans to make ECDIS compulsary for ships under 3000GRT.... however the owners of those ships...

With paper...what you see is what you get... assuming you aren't that 'experienced' sailor in NZ a few weeks ago.

Most if not all chart plotter assisted...

At the commercial end of the spectrum paper charts have mostly become superfluous regardless of what ship masters would like mainly because they have commercial grade ECDIS systems.

It probably is about choice as those that choose to have paper charts on board do not think they are pointless or superfluous. Those that don't have them on board most likely think they are pointless...

Oh, big ships still get hit by lightning.... whether your ecdis is working or not tends to be the least of your worries.....

In exactly the same way as electronic charts would have saved that bloke in NZ.

I'm glad someone has finally asked about 'Ping's One Inch Rule'

Back in the days when paper charts were all there was I developed this rule.

It states 'Regardless of the scale of chart in use...

I don't think anyone in this thread or the very many other threads on this topic say to use paper to the exclusion of electronic... them on the 'paper' side of the fence all seem to be saying 'use...

No... he was caught out because he wasn't using a chart of the appropriate scale for the job in hand. He obviously had never heard of the 'one inch' rule.

If all he had was that chart he should...
