Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
This is most definitely not just a Beneteau problem. I'm sure every boat builder who bolts on keels is looking at these pictures and considering the engineering of their bolted keels. I expect there... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
Good argument for stern accessible life raft mounts too. I guess a molded transom pocket would be more secure than rail mounting. . |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
It is the tragic loss of four lives that so troubles me. Had only the boat been lost, this would be much easier to to take. I don't question the crew in any way. They had the strength, experience,... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
I'm still trying to understand the picture. It appears to show three broken bolts (two forward and one aft) and a center 18"x6" (?) section of laminate pulled entirely out such that we are looking at... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
What do people make of this part of the report from the swimmer: They found the cabin of the yacht was flooded and the windows shattered. The yacht's keel was also broken, causing a breach in the... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
Honestly, how many boats without a keel that fit the Rafiki's description are floating around near the yacht's last location? And if the boat had survival suits, hydrostatic release deck mounted... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
Zboss, Astounding. 150 miles and multiple charter skippers without noticing a missing keel. I stand corrected. |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
While it's always heartbreaking to call off a search, it seems hopeless. The CG says that they "saturated the area" and "we would have found them". I think that's plausible given the special facts of... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
The boat that lost its keel in the previous post had large water ballast tanks that were carefully managed to keep it from capsizing. It's also not clear to me whether the 14 hours to capsize was... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
Rescues are risky to the rescuers. The death of the CG rescue swimmer during the "Perfect Storm" is an example. It is one thing to ask rescuers to risk their lives when it is known that there are... |

Re: UK yacht Cheeki Rafiki missing in mid-Atlantic
I think the comments on PLB vs. EPIRB ignores some reasonable interpretation of what we've been told: A signal was received from not one but two PLB's. It sounds like the PLB failed to get a GPS... |
