You are arguing over the specifics rather than the principal.

So make it 3ft diameter...still drastically larger and more visible as an empty mylar ball will be 99% above the water.

So you are saying an 8-10" diameter human head at water level with a 12" orange life preserver is easier to spot than a 10ft diameter orange ball floating on the water?

But after a few minutes the smoke grenade will be gone.

A large balloon would be visible indefinitely short of damage.

While altitude is helpful, yeah, a 10ft diameter orange ball floating on the surface next to the guy would be a pretty big improvement for long range spotting.
