I use Inkscape as well sometimes. Great program. But working with svgs is a whole other can of worms. I wasn't sure if the OP was familiar with them.

There is a free image editing program called "GIMP" that can do everything you need. You can download it here (https://www.gimp.org/).

This might be part of the problem. You cannot change the image type by simply renaming it. You must open the file in an editor that can then save it as a png or jpg.

Just to be sure: When you say you "changed the file type to ownship.png and ownship.jpg", did you open them in an image editor and then save as the new format ... or did you simply change the file...
