Re: Cost of sails
All fair comment there. I just wonder about "racers" sails. As an intended cruise/live-aboard vessel I am inclined to avoid ex racing sails. They are prepared/designed to perform short-term and are... |

Re: Cost of sails
I'm sure that was a typo. A sail custom-built for your boat is ideal but I'm sure we are all not perfectionists that sail within perfect parameters? :D Even "racers" are not that good? |

Re: Cost of sails
Good advice Pete. UK has the opportunity for decent/good prices but often we get ripped off here. A question of being careful and doing our homework. |

Re: Cost of sails
I did a budgetary exercise for a 47 foot Beneteau and it was less than that quote for a heavier duty Dacron 3 reef mainsail as well as the Genoa with cover. The Gib was similar to the staysail price... |

Re: Cost of sails
Haha ... there isn't a WORLD big enough for me to want to sail with my ex on-board. :D |

Re: Cost of sails
Keeping an "ex" on board might be tantamount to enduring a "double squall"? |

Re: Cost of sails
Ok, I've made up my mind ... I am packing bedsheets in and going to spend time double stitching them together lol. :D |

Re: Cost of sails
I can believe that and I agree that having that extra reefing option will definitely help a lot in a blow. |

Re: Cost of sails
I can still remember my first sail boat when I was 10 and my brother was 8. It was a small 8 ft row boat we took a bed sheet and a couple of 1X2 and jury rigged something to... |

Re: Cost of sails
I fully agree, I really have never had any interest in racing yachts at all. For me it is about sailing joy and satisfaction coupled with meeting people at a more relaxed place at all sorts of... |

Re: Cost of sails
Good advice, which echoes my thoughts on sails. Hull, rigging, sails and engine are critical for us with our intentions of living aboard/cruising, everything else from there takes a diminishing order... |

Re: Cost of sails
Thanks, that info might come in handy if the boat we buy needs a sail or two. :thumb: |

Re: Cost of sails
The $US8-10k is probably a good place to start but for most live aboard cruising sail boats you may well come in at less than half that price for a very good set of sails.
Thanks Tom, good... |

Re: Cost of sails
I agree with you there. Hopefully the boat we decide on eventually will have at least a newish main sail or Genoa. |

Glad you happy with it ... I see you have a 35 footer? May I ask what sort of cost (u obviously don't need to answer that if u don't want to). |

Your information appears logical and sound and I will bear that in mind when out there looking for our boat. Makes me lean even more towards a production boat like the Beneteau/Jeanneau or maybe... |

Re: Cost of sails
Yeah, I will not be interested in high tech or racing so I guess good used sails if they can be found, will be fine and that will likely reduce the expected budget. |
