Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it ?
I have a new thought about a potential cause for the burnt oil. I wonder if anyone - in particular anyone with a ZF transmission can chime in on this.... I have noticed that there is a little bit... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it ?
Thanks Maine Sail, I did leave this new gear in forward once. I remember kicking myself when I realized, but I don't know how long I had it in forward for. There are no more than 8 hours on it... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it ?
Gday Jim, I have the 2.0.4 gear. The last one that failed I ran quite hard, New York to Florida on the ICW, some motor sailing into rough seas, and one 29 hour stretch when I was becalmed offshore.... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it ?
Jim Cate, I wondered about that, and it is something I need to check with ZF. i.e. is there a risk of the clutch not being properly engaged if the rpms are too low (not enough centrifugal force),... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
I usually put it in reverse, I did accidentally leave it in forward for a short while. |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
I have a right hand prop, run in the A position and have a 25hp engine. So in theory at least, that shouldn't be the problem. |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
Thanks Target9000, I will double and triple-check the alignment to be sure. The engine is a Universal 25XPB. The specs for the ZF10 say it can handle 37hp continuous duty. But the detailed ratings... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
Only saw the last two posts after posting myself. "Disposable transmissions" oy, that is scary. I've disposed a lot of money on them. It has really hurt my cruising plans. I'm kicking myself a... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
Thanks for the advice all. I did speak to ZF again, they said that oil color would suggest the clutch was overheated. They said that this is usually because the shifter is not configured to... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
I really hope it's part of break in. Because if another one fails I'm going to switch to a PRM gear, which will require some re-working. Yes, it's an Alberg design. I think all the Cape Dory... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
I don't have a cooler. It's a brand new gear, pretty sure nothing is getting in to the oil. Kettlewell, the question as to why they keep failing is a whole other kettle of fish. I've checked and... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
It went in cherry red and clear, it came out deep velvety purple and opaque. I was sure hoping that it is just the break-in, and tiny filings are causing the milkiness. But as I said, this is my... |

Re: What does your ATF oil look like when you change it??
Hard to describe, it smells 'chemical-ly'. I didn't fancy tasting it. |

What does your ATF oil look like when you change it ?
Hi, I'm on my third ZF10m in around 500 hours. The new gear is 2 months old and has 25 hours on it. I just changed the oil, per manufacturers recommendation, and I'm a little concerned about the... |
