Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Speaking of shorted cells... (didn't somebody?)...

Yesterday our 12V BCI Group 48 (H6) car battery crapped out. Installed 10/2/2013, working fine (apparently) as of 5/15/2017... shorted cell on...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

A couple more thoughts, in case useful for the wider readership...

Our split dual-purpose banks also each have their own set of house loads. One fridge each, electrics on one and electronics on...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Yes, I think our setup wouldn't have been my first choice, but it has turned out to work surprisingly well -- or at least very well enough for our purposes -- over the last 12 years or so.

And...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Yeah... earlier on, I hadn't realized that could be worth a look, but as it is, I can only stuff 4x of that case size in the space available.

I looked at their taller 6V versions too, but there's...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

It's taken me several years to gravitate toward this coming solution. And even then, I didn't want to make the change before I actually needed to make the change (which is now) so I've been...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

3x Odyssey PC-2150 12V AGM. Installed April 2006.

I'm very satisfied with their performance and longevity, but need more capacity... and can't fit 4x G31s in the available space.

Changeover...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

My point was simply that we often have nothing better to use for comparison.

I can do "critical thinking" 'til the cows come home, but when we only have one predictive for comparison, and it's...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Well, I don't really have an "argument" for/against any of this. As I said earlier, G27s won't fit where I need them to be, so I didn't spend lots of time shopping all the various brands of G27s. ...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Haven't been able to find info about predicted cycles on all of them, and truthfully haven't spent much time shopping on these since horizontal dimensions are problematic for my installation...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Yeah, but they start getting longer, too. The Trojan 27MTH and the SCS200 say 115 Ah (20 hr rate), but they're also each 3/4" longer and minor as that seems, that makes them essentially the same...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Just double-checked my memory about installation in the available space. The Trojan G27 AGMs (for example) are actually almost close to fitting. Tray or box would have to have near-zero clearance,...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Footprint won't quite fit... but 440 is better than 400 anyway.

Not seeing G27 products with same predicted cycle life as GC2s, although I haven't checked Rolls? (Yes, lab cycles are different...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Yep. Example: I can fit one 12V 8D, three 12V G31s in parallel, or four 6V GC2s in series/parallel in one of our dual-purpose battery spaces. Which means approx 245, 300, or 440 Ah for house loads....

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

What's the point, there?

Most of those are focused on starting applications, with a few systems usually only in use when the engine is running.

Golf carts and forklifts... and Duffy and Elco...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Thought you're trying to build a 12V system? If so, you'd only need to parallel those eight 12V batteries.

FWIW, at this point, I've read fewer batteries is better. If true, four 200-Ah 12V...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Issue complicated by religion... and by specific details of use in a specific installation... by degree of risk, and a user's risk tolerance... and by money.

Conclusions I've drawn from reading...
