Re: Satelite AIS.

I waved! I must say I am a bit envious of you over there ping, what a lovely place. If you let us know nezt ine you head off down the channels I can see how well S-ais works on your boat.

The...

Re: Satelite AIS.

On the move... This is fun!

Wish I had known about it earlier when we crossed the tasman.

Saying that I think its only working so well because there are hardly any other boats about where they...

Re: Satelite AIS.

I realise the info is not live, this is interesting info, I guess it takes a huge amount of processing power to track the numbers of vessels they do, but so far it seems to be reasonably current. At...

Re: Satelite AIS.

It's still working nicely, with a few odd weird lags.

Yesterday they wandered over to another bay and Marine traffic showed the move nicely even though it wouldn't give me boat details I knew it...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Thanks John for your excellant input. I have no idea why they used that particular antenna. It specifically says it needs a base plate to work properly. Probably designed to go on a car roof or...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Though the truth is that it seems to work reasonably well with a standard class b ais system, at least in the less crowded south pacific.

It is not as good as a proper sat tracker, but its...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Very interesting. Using SAR as well. I wonder how it goes tracking a yacht?

Re: Satelite AIS.

Hi LD, thats interesting that RCC's have been using this for years. I guess it really helps them coordinate assets in the area quickly.

I dont think at this point it will really effect the takeup...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Thats pretty impressive from a tracking perspective, though it looks like a lot of the area is covered by terrestrial AIS. It sure looks lile they are having a heap of fun!

What sort of tracking...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Yeah, very true, I tend to like to be pretty independant, but I have no problem with others knowing where I am. I usually arrange a radio sched once a day. For safety reasons, but if I had AIS like...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Thats a good bit of data, yeah some of the S-AIS updates seem pretty old. But other times it seems to refresh pretty often? I guess the Class B ais is a pretty marginal signal and it more a fluke...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Barnicle, you are right about the issues with private companies, so thats a good point, but the same applies to most satellite providers. Infact you could see S-AIS as being a good backup for other...

Re: Satelite AIS.

I really like both the all three systems, spot, YB, and Delorme. Its good to see what they can do, for the price they give great value, and it may well be that something like that is what they end...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Thats them, unless another yacht with AIS left otago and entered Akaroa at exactly the same time. So it definitely seems AIS B can work.

But the update period was about 12 hours or more from the...

Re: Satelite AIS.

I suppose that is the question I am asking.

So far it seems to have worked to a limited extent on my folks boat, with updates every few hours while offshore, less when in enclosed waters. I am...

Re: Satelite AIS.

I do like the Delorme. I think if I was headed offshore at the moment either that, or the YB would be high on my list. In aussie the plans are not as good as the US unlimited plan which seems like a...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Just looked up the latest spot plans, pretty neat option if you were away for a while. In aussie dollars its looking like around $200 for the spot, and $120 usd per year for a basic tracking plan. So...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Not for a few one off voyages were it might be posible that $20 would cover it quite well. With this system, even the free limited version seems to work reasonably well. And has no extra cost, given...

Re: Satelite AIS.

Here is a picture of the satelite tracking working.

Interesting that it seems to struggle to update in inshore waters. Maybe its because of the land around the vessel? Or maybe the update...

Satelite AIS.

Been tracking my folks boat as the head up the coast of NZ. They have just fitted a normal class B AIS. I am finding that marine traffic seems to show them up fairly regularly via satelite even when...
