You could use the hardwood without varnish..apply a few coats of epoxy, scuff it up, acetone wipe, and paint over.

Just another idea :)

g10 is wonderful stuff. Check out mcmaster carr. 1/2" shouldn't be too expensive.

Also great for backing plates
