Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Kiwi - well you just opened a huge can of worms. The answer is: yes, no, maybe, or if you don't like those: maybe, yes no

In Denmark, where I live. All boats (no matter how small) are required...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Yeah Kiwi, you picked up on it correctly. Occasionally we get carried away and sailor jargon takes over. Currently the discussion is endless (and probably closer to arguing religion than science)...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Andrew

Your methods are inpeccable and worthy of imitation. However most "sailors" today simly look at their chartplotter and say "we're here". If they only have a HH GPS they they simply plot...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Andrew,

In keeping with your Vigor Black Box Theory, I would imagine that every time you practice using a sextant, you are adding a couple of credits to the box.

I once saw a yacht come into...

Wolfensee

I can only agree with you. I have a sextant and practice enough to be able to use it. When i do my RTW, it will get a lotmore use:popcorn:

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I liked and agree with the earlier sentiment "Just because paper charts are not necessary, does not mean they are unnecessary"

Hope I quoted that correctly.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I didn't think this could be completely true. The website quoted above is NOT an official YANMAR website. I tried to get to YANMAR corporate, but they refer everyone to their dealers. I talked with...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Oh I'm not burdened by it. But you need to get your so-called "facts" to correspond with reality. You wrote that the techie had said 2800 RPM was " WAY below optimal"

2800 RPM is not below...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Might up your credibility around here if you told that story correctly. 2800 RPM is NOT "way below optimal". Might be above optimal, not below. Running a diesel in idle for afew days also will not...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

This was a Yanmar diesel? And the Yanmar techie says that 2800 RPM was "way below Optimal?"

Really?

Optimal RPMs for almost all diesels are around 2000. 2800 is pretty high. I have a Yanmar...

Zeehag - keep sailing towards the setting sun (west for those that don't know). Eventually you'll hit land.

Noelex77 - I have checked this with the Danish National Maritime Board. According to them, unless the National Board issues an exemption (as in the case of the UK - see above), then under SOLAS,...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

My apologies Conachair. I checked your link and it does indeed specify that Reg 27 does not apply to uk-falgged pleasure craft under 150 gt.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

The source of my quote is the International Maritime Organization. I believe it cover UK-flagged vessels also (I may be wrong on this though). I copied directly from theirs - so at the IMO - it is...

Don't know about you guys, but I don't have ECDIS and damn few cruisers have (I've never heard of it).

But I'll repeat - here in Denmark, unless you have ECDIS (double redundant on everything)...

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

Actually - no. SOLAS applies to whatever group of ships or boats the local authorities say it does. Here in DK the Maritime Authorities say all boats. The same is probably true for many countries
