Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

No, he's not on a beam reach. Notice that his sail is a full right angles to the boat and pressed hard on the spreader - sorry he's DDW or something very close. Looking at the full video, you'll...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

No, It can't be RAM since the RAM connotation refers to boats that are retricted by the nature of their work. These classifications are predicable and listed in Rule 3. The sailboat is not RAM due to...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

Look closely at the video. His spinnaker pole is set on his starboard side. I willing to bet his genua got blown off the pole by the wind. With that heavy a wind, he probably couldn't winch in his...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

Re the other thread currently running about knives - this is the reason I have sheath knives permanently mounted at the helm and at the mast (plus the foldable I always carry). In this situation,...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

I got flattened once in a blow like that (I know much better now). I think I would have taken the knock-down rather than the collision. If you'r hanging on tight - you'll make it and the boat will...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

I have been out in a 50+ knot blow and it certainly is no picnic. But if I had seen that cloud front coming, I'd have dropped the main and runon my genny only.
By the way -don't ask me how I know...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

yeah, he apparently had more problems than he needed. I think I would have put the helm hard over and gone on a beam reach. He would have laid the boat down, but it wouldn't have flipped and that...

Re: T-boning a Ferry in Sidney

NO he was going DDW - notice that his spinnaker pole is set - he was running butterfly with the main to one side and genua poled out other. Damn if I know how he got his genua loose from the pole....
