Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

Just a sad note to add to this thread; The owner of Wild Oates XI, Bob Oatley (87), died today.

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

How does that work???

Pushing hard enough to blow out mainsail into strong southerly when you are in the lead is OK but carrying some sort of jury repair and pushing on at a slower speed is...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

I dunno what media Factor was referring to but I heard on tellie and read somewhere on a website in the evening of the 26th that both WOXI and Comanche had retired. Clearly someone got it wrong!

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

More silly super maxi questions!

Would it be usual or unusual to have more than one mainsail aboard?

Can these supersized sails be hoisted in say 25 kts?

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

Dunno but it wouldn't be from lack of $$$$

From what others have posted, I reckon it is just the same old story as occurs in every race.

There is a balance between pushing harder to...

Hey RC, we are on the same page, maybe just reading different paragraphs :flowers::thumb:.

And yes, back to the race!
Did you take a captain cook at some of the archival footage from...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

As you may notice, I know very little about hands on sailing of super-maxis so a question - is it possible de-power to really slow these boats down in heavy weather to limit potential damage?

This...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

I do mean it and I'd be surprised if at some level, you did not agree with it also. For the very large part, the Australia society (in line with most of world) accepts it.

While this is thread...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

I see I was misleading - totally unintentional - sorry. I used the inverted comas around "the state" to indicate the term was being used in a generic sense rather than a governmental sense. As in a...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

As always, this boat race is about the first to get to Hobart, clearly some competitors have over estimated their ability to complete that task. This does not take anything away from them except of...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

'98 was special in the number of fatalities and the weather was extreme. It was also outstanding in the rescue of so may entrants. Never had the limited rescue facilities being so overstretched as in...

Yep, me too and almost no coverage of the main part of the fleet. Zip - nada - nothing :banghead:

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

I guess I disagree :)

Over the 70 old year history of the race, most if not all boats can handle the conditions between Sydney and Hobart. Some will handle bad conditions by withdrawing (this is...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

You are of course correct that this is only my opinion but I suggest the way it is now is not an improvement or advancement of boating - both racing and cruising. I fear that such "control" by "the...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

Re the heavy weather aspects of the SH, plenty is written about 1998 but let's not forget that other years were just as bad (apart from the fatalities). 1993 was just as bad weather wise, 104...

Re: Sydney To Hobart 2015-2016

Let's not get sidetracked about the additional power source being diesel or electric. If the main purpose of the power source is to make the boat go faster than using wind alone, then the vessel is...
