Re: St. Pete to Miami via Lake Okeechobee

I've been through the canal many times, The railroad bridge at the north east end of the Lake is 49, I made it under with 54 and lots of healing, read and see it on my website. If you want, when...

Re: Small generator + electric propulsion for dingy

I never really intend to use this, it is only for emergency, if I need to travel 50 miles in the dinghy. I don't ever expect to need reduced power, or any power actually, so I really could care less...

Re: Small generator + electric propulsion for dingy

I've tested my trolling motor and have it figured out, it's an older Minn Kota, it has 5 speeds and each speed is a separate wire, I ohmed out a speed switch from a newer Minn Kota and I think they...

Re: Carrying a Sailing Dinghy on a Sailing Liveaboard

I took a 9.5 foot fiberglass sailboat and turned it into a 2 piece nesting dinghy that I row everyday for exercise. I'm on a 45 ft steel ketch, the dinghy normally stores full length hanging on it's...

I'm done with this forum, I try to make a proposal that definitely would work, and in my opinion would have saved energy, politely ask for constructive criticism, and 90% of you people jump on me...

Re: Boat Bikes -- Some Observations

That's rather similar to my frame, but my frame pieces hinge at the crank bearings, my seat post holds all the upper frame parts all together. The main difference is my wheels can come apart and...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

Finally somebody was polite enough to get me to actually take them serious, I did read about this Peukert's effect and I'll have to take that into account and do some thinking, I did learn something...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

How does the amount of useful power change when you take it out of one 12 volt battery that comes from a 48 volt series connection or it is just standing by itself. Normally when you have multiple...

KISS is keep it simple STUPID, that had been used numerous times in my direction..

As for controller being so close to the battery, do you think they could measure the battery temperature that far...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

If you will look between the trees that are blocking your view you will find that I don't intend to have one battery fully discharged, even though I did ask what would happen if that was the case. I...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

There are losses in all electrical systems, but with solar we are working with such small amounts of energy so it is important to conserve what ever we can. Sure you can solve this with bigger...

You just refuse to get it, you can't see the forest because your too busy beating your head against a tree, I'm asking for constructive criticism, I could care less that your 100 watt panel puts out...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

let's look at an imaginary typical system, 3 100 watt 12v panels = 8 amps per panel

installed in parallel at the back of a sailboat to reduce shading problems, thus 24 amps in a wire.

30 feet...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

I remember now why I wanted to go to higher voltage, it is efficiency, the loses in the wires are due to the current not the voltage, at higher voltage and reduced current you have much less loss. ...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

On the surface I have to agree, I'm trying to remember what got me to wanting to hook the batteries in series, it had something to do with charging efficiency of the controller and voltage I think. ...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

I'm not needlessly complicating it.

I have 7 solar panels (3 large and 4 small) and 5 batteries (4 large and one starting), everything on the boat is 12 volts,

I need to get solar panel...

Re: Small generator + electric propulsion for dingy

The idea of using a small generator to power an electric motor that powers the dinghy has the advantage of having a generator that can do many things, it can power the dinghy, can power an electric...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

There is a good reason for discharging one at a time in my setup, you can't have 4 batteries in series for charging and in Parallel for discharging at the same time. It's either one or the other. ...

Re: Challenges with Solar on boats

Answering my own question, I'm pretty sure this system would only work well if the house battery is switched many times a day to tend to equal the discharge of all 4 batteries. I would assume, but...
