Re: Hard Dodger (Sprayhood) Illustrated Guide - Examples, Tips

I was not interested in having a "box on top", so we did a lot of silhouettes on the boat and got back 50 ft to see how it looked. We did that from all angles to end up with the shape we went with....

Re: Hard Dodger (Sprayhood) Illustrated Guide - Examples, Tips

I have had a number of compliments on my home built hardtop which we added to "Wombat of Sydney", our Beneteau First 47.7 in 2009. The final results have been very pleasing for long passages and...

Re: Custom Beneteau First 47.7 2002 Deck Table

For those interested in the Deck Table. It should be obvious as to how it is constructed. The center section of the table slides over the top of the SS mount. One advantage of this arrangement is...

Re: Custom Beneteau First 47.7 2002

Yes. The boat was imported in 2012 and flag was changed from Australian to US. Now documented with USCG.

Re: Custom Beneteau First 47.7 2002

We had the table built in Trinidad. The mounting is via a Stainless Steel tube fastened with 4 bolts to the cockpit floor. The shape is sort of like a large flat topped hoop with a footrest tube 4"...

Re: Custom Beneteau First 47.7 2002

I forgot to say that the dodger is made with 3/4 inch Klegecell foam sandwiched between 600gram double bias fiberglass. Two men can stand on the top!

Re: Custom Beneteau First 47.7 2002

The hard dodger was made in Australia. A male form was made on the boat, then moved to a shop. Materials were around 8k and it took 3 months. Well worth it.

Anchoring in New York area

We want to visit NYC this summer and will have friends flying into NY from Sydney to stay for a few weeks. After looking at the cost of marina berths, we need to find a good place to anchor that is...

Re: Beneteau 47.7 , Convert Watertank to Diesel

We contacted the company in France that made the tank and were told that the plastic used was identical in every regard, except color, to the diesel tank. They said to change all of the gaskets to a...

Re: Are Island Packets Really That Slow?

Quite often you cannot leave until you have good light, so departing 3 hours earlier is not an option (particularly in the tropics where day/night are both around 12 hours). Sometimes it is difficult...

Re: Are Island Packets Really That Slow?

The people we have met that have the IP swear by them, but they are always much slower from point to point than other cruising boats of a similar size. It could be the guy on the helm, but I believe...

Re: Motorcycle on a Sloop ? Ideas Welcome

I appreciate all of the suggestions and comments received. I have bought a Suzuki S40 650cc motorcycle and made everything for carrying it onboard our 48ft sloop. I choose the bike because it had...

Re: Motorcycle on a Sloop? Ideas welcome

I think your solution is good, but I am looking for one that can cater for my wife and I doing day-trips up the east coast of the USA and then hops around Europe. We would be doing highway speeds. I...

Re: Motorcycle on a Sloop? Ideas welcome

Thanks for Monkey Bike idea, but I am looking for a minimum of 250cc cycle. After I determine how to carry it and get it on and off the boat, then I will put as big a cycle on as I figure it will...

Re: Trying to Decide on Red Sea Passage

My wife did not enjoy the bumpy conditions, nor did I for that matter. I would do it again rather than do the Red Sea. I talked to a couple of friends that did the Red Sea and two of them said that...

Re: How to Avoid Somali Pirates ?

The concept of an predominately unarmed convoy is flawed. :banghead: These pirates are the same people that took on the US Rangers and such in "BlackHawk Down". You think that a group of cruisers...

Motorcycle on a Sloop ? Ideas Welcome

I am looking at fixing a motorcycle carrier (like used on a truck's trailer hitch) on the transom of a 48ft sloop. A waterproof cover made of stamoid, or such, would provide a reasonable degree of...

Re: Trying to Decide on Red Sea Passage

We are presently in Cape Town after crossing the Indian Ocean. The trip is bumpy and uncomfortable, but not dangerous. If you look at the cost of shipping as money you earn, you will pay yourself...

Re: Code Zero ?

As someone that has used a Code Zero over the last 5 years, my advice would be to be very careful of the sail material used. To hold shape when sailing in the 60 degree awa range, sailmakers will...
