Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

Thanks, Carsten. I think my next step is to verify what type of tuner I actually have. All the discussion is leading me to think that I have something other than an AT-140.

A lot of my confusion...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

OK, John. Now you have me doubting myself. I thought I had an AT-140 tuner, but it now seems unlikely since that setup probably wouldn't work. I am away from my boat right now so I can't look at...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

HelloSailor and DeepFrz,

You are correct that my radio's internal antenna tuner will not tune the AT-140. It took a while to figure that one out. Eventually I was told to whistle into the keyed...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

There is no separate device. I was told to whistle into the keyed mike to tune the antenna tuner. This used to work great. Immediately, the SWR would drop very low.

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

John,

It took me a while to type a response to one of your previous posts. While I was typing, more responses came in, including a follow up by you. I think I have now fully described the...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

John,

I appreciate your willingness to help me with this. You are correct that I did not give a detailed description of my equipment and my problem. I was really just interested in getting...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

Magnus,

Sorry I bungled your call sign. My fat fingers don't work well on my phone's keyboard.

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

SM6WEZ,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, the problem is not as you described it. You are, of course, correct that I would need to retune my antenna as I move between frequencies. In...

Re: Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

Thank you all for your replies. I have an automatic antenna tuner. My ham radio has a built in SWR meter. I was told to key the mike and whistle into it to tune the antenna. This worked well. ...

Need a SSB/Ham Radio Expert

Can anyone recommend someone in the Kemah, TX area that is really good with Marine SSB or Ham radios? I have a Ham radio on my boat. Suddenly, I am not able to tune my backstay antenna very well. ...

Re: Offer Accepted...Gulp

When you get to Waterford, please let me know. We keep our IP40 at Watergate. We can compare notes.

I bought mine in November 2013. She was in Tampa. It was a fun adventure getting her to...

Re: Local Knowledge for Barrier Islands, Gulf of Mexico

Ocean Girl,

We were trying to work our way west through that area last winter. The northers can be pretty brutal. I don't know if you are on a schedule or not, but, you might want to wait until...

Re: Hot Water Hose Insulation

The flexible foam is what is on there now. I could do the same, but it will be much harder to snake it through the boat with that additional bulk.

Hot Water Hose Insulation

My guess is that the boat was manufactured that way. It is a 1995 model with one prior owner. The hoses seem pretty old so they may be original.

They are pretty smelly which is why I am...

Hot Water Hose Insulation

I am in the process of changing out the water hoses on my boat. The hot water hoses are insulated. On my prior boat, they were not. I didn't have any hot water issues on my prior boat, but it was...

Re: HF Antenna Question

Bill,

I was able to make my first contact today. It was someone who was contesting so we just made contact and then it was over. He acknowledged that my signal was good. I'm in Gulfport, MS. ...

Re: HF Antenna Question

Thank you. This is very helpful. I'm about to start my 6- hour drive to the boat. It sounds like I can safely (if not optimally) use the radio this evening. I can redo my wire tomorrow. I'm...

Re: HF Antenna Question

Sorry to be a pest, but, I have another question. When I bought the boat, the GTO wire was frayed almost completely through. I didn't know what type wire to replace it with. Someone told me to use...

Re: HF Antenna Question

Thank you. That seems easy enough. Both the GTO and the backstay go through a hole in the bimini. At that point, I won't be able to get as much separation as you suggest, but I can keep some...

HF Antenna Question

I use an insulated backstay as the antenna for my HF radio. As is typical, there is a wire that connects the antenna to the antenna tuner. That wire goes through a hole in the deck near the...

Re: Ham Radio vs Marine SSB

Going back to my original post, I passed the technician class license test today. I won't have many privileges, but I will be able to get on my radio in a couple of weeks when my call sign is issued.

Re: Ham Radio vs Marine SSB

Wow!! As the OP, I was just curious if it was worth the effort to get a ham license.
