Re: Question about speed...

In effect the op is saying I know nothing about sailing but am concerned that it might get too windy and a large motor might get me home quick before I get into trouble.
By quick he means at over 15...

Re: Buying a boat in New Zealand

I think the situation is that a boat may visit without paying duty as it is not imported. However that stay is limited.
If it is sold in NZ duty applies and that works out around 20% including gst....

Re: Buying a boat in New Zealand

Ok. If you are talking NZD in particular but even USD you might be pushing it.
While there are many good coastal boats, bringing a boat to long distance blue water standard can be costly. NZ has a...

Re: Problem with Part 1 UK Registre

You can register under Part 3 if you are an EU national and live in the UK for 185 days a year.
You cannot use this to secure a registered loan against the boat.
You can register under Part 1 if...

Re: Boat Type Advice

I agree with the previous posters and won't repeat those points. You probably won't be doing great distances but fuel adds up even in an economic hull. Do the sums.
Secondly I doubt that there are...

Re: Confusing question

You have an initial boat position with a distance and bearing from A. B is 2 miles from A, in a direction close to your heading. After 15 minutes it is almost behind you so you have moved roughly 2 +...

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

Maybe. We don't know the ship time which is the local as far as the crew are concerned. It may have been set to Thai time i.e. + 7 or updated automatically according to longitude which is +6 not as...

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

Now maybe I am confused. Reading one of the Garmin manuals it refers to choosing UST 12 or 24 hr time format. It also refers to setting a time zone and DST. Presumably that is for local cruising...

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

There seems to be some confusion entering into this discussion and perhaps a clarification of some of the basics may help some because most of us don’t actually use this stuff much.
Firstly UTC...

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

If my memory is correct Indonesia has 3 time zones. On an automatic system it should have ust +7 in that general area. However if the system took into account national waters it could have been...

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

I think Malaysia is on GMT + 8 whereas Thailand is on GMT + 7. If the latter is what was being used aboard then one could work out a time. This may not be what the log shot shows.
Memories are...

That might involve some work for both of you in listening and thinking, but more importantly perhaps it changes the framework...

Subsequently most passages are shorter say up to 1500...

Re: Semi Displacement vs Planing

I doubt that if one can afford a 200k pound boat 75 pounds an hour for fuel at economy planing speed would be an issue. One could probably afford to go for a jaunt for a few hours.
The limit in...

Re: Semi Displacement vs Planing

The question of semi-displacement v planing is an interesting one, I raised it on crew.org.nz a couple of weeks ago.
It is also discussed a number of times on boatdesign.com.
The subject can get...

Re: How much do you use your boat?

Since having a keeler and getting older I have found maintenance takes at least as long as...

Re: seasick novelist has some questions

It is far more likely that an older boat is small -30 35' and somewhat cramped, particularly with stores and spare sails. It would also be narrow compared with modern boats. Probably wooden with wood...
