Re: When we shouldn't encourage people to "just go"

I'm not frustrated personally... just trying to understand why some people feel the need to be trolls.

1) Yes but you are paying said teacher (via tuition or taxes)
2) True
3)True
4) They are...

Re: The criteria of "blue"

Mine was (unfortunately) converted to traditional booms so I can't answer the reefing question but you have a lot more options for heavy weather and they are all laid out in the build drawings!...

Re: When we shouldn't encourage people to "just go"

Some great points but one of the problems is right there in the definition. Specifically in the word exchange. New sailors ask a lot of questions but what are they offering in exchange?? Very little....

Re: Boat Stamp

I've worked aboard ships and the ship's stamp is usually kept in a locked draw in the Captain's cabin or the safe. In many ports the stamp is more important than the Captain's signature and in third...

Re: Knot Dyslexia

The problem is you were thinking about it. Ask any major league batter what they are thinking about during the wind up and they will say "nothing".... in fact, most of the pre-batting routines they...

Re: When we shouldn't encourage people to "just go"

The great maritime author Felix Reisenberg had a saying that's engraved above the sallyport at SUNY Maritime College... "The sea is selective, slow at recognition of effort and aptitude but fast in...

Re: Running aground

I once applied for a Captain's job and was asked if I've ever run aground. I answered yes and got the job. Later I asked the marine superintendent about the questions and he said "You answered...

Re: The criteria of "blue"

Deck is cored but the hull is solid. I purchased her because there are very few safe anchorage spots nearby and we need to navigate either Point Conception or the Golden Gate to get anywhere... so I...

Re: Safety At Sea

Love it Adam! It reminds me of a joke: A man is sailing to Carnegie hall and falls overboard, how will he survive ;)

(P.S. As a former crew member of Lora Ann please say hello to Richard for me! )

Re: Hunter 33 sailing around Cape Horn

This is what's called a win-win situation: either you'll return with a great story or a Darwin award!

Re: The criteria of "blue"

We aren't talking extremes... life is lived in the gray areas and marine incidents are always the result of a chain of events. A collision with a container is a survivable problem depending on your...

Re: The criteria of "blue"

A "blue water boat" is one capable of handling mistakes.

That is... In the hands of a perfect skipper nearly any boat can handle the ocean but a "blue water boat" will get you to a safe harbor...

Re: Dropcam Or Wireless Camera on Bow

Dropcam Or Wireless Camera on Bow

In a post dated March 6, 2012 Ben Ellison at Panbo wrote about using a baby monitor on your boat to monitor various parts of your boat. My boat is not big enough to need any of this but, with not one...

Re: What will Happen to you when GPS goes Down

What about calling the uscg on your iridium and, with their permission, engaging your EPIRB? Both iridium and satsat are less susceptible to failure than gps and the uscg, via satsar, should be able...

Re: Antarctica

If you fall overboard then your only chance of survival is if the boat you fell off of recovers you fast.... So a PLB won't help. An AIS SART is s much better bet.

If your vessel sinks under you...

What will Happen to you when GPS goes Down

Yes, it's unlikely to go down in coastal waters off the US but I was in the Bay of Bengal when the 2nd gulf war started and the GPS experience "an unplanned regional outage" :0

And it's not just...

Re: Weather Frequencies

This is the first I've heard of Chris Parker... Looks like he provides an A+ service.

Does anyone provide a similar service for the west coast?

Re: Safety Tips to Share

I agree with your advice to up size your fire extinguisher... And I carry both a large dry chem and a large co2.

That said there is one other fault of CO2: CO2 (like dry chem) does not cool the...
