Re: Tragic accident on East Passage near Newport

We were out that afternoon headed northbound in the East Passage and passed several F18’s southbound off Prudence Island. I’m guessing this was part of the fleet since the accident occurred about 5...

Catamaran v Utility Wires Vero Beach

The boat in these pics drifted into overhead electric wires just south of the Vero Beach 17th St Bridge last week. The pole in the foreground of the first picture is one of the utility poles carrying...

Re: Solbian Solar Panels

Our Solbian panels were installed in the Spring of 2013. I have seen no performance degradation. The boat is on the hard for the winter with the panels removed so the wear and tear is going to be...

Re: Ideal windlass issue

Try calling Schaefer and ask for Cliff. He was the problem solver at Ideal and was at Schaefer when I last called a bit over a year ago. If you have the model number he can often help you diagnose...

Re: Cleaning prop under water - tips?

I use a plastic or metal scraper. More important, cheap Kevlar diving gloves were a well spent $10 or $15. They completely eliminated my chopped up hands from the barnacles.

Re: Does this solar system sound OK for my needs and setup?

Agree with Noelex that this is a reasonable system, but don't skimp on the controller. It's relatively short money. We are also on a mooring or at anchor. We have had 2X125 watt Solbians wired in...

Re: What you should know about brokers

We used the same BB to buy our last two boats. He also got the listing for the first boat he helped us with. We traveled about 200 miles to look at boats. Our broker went on the local viewings -- up...

Re: Anchorages near Boston, MA

Enjoy Hull! We were at the Hull YC and moored in Allerton Harbor for several years. It is a very low key place that we enjoyed.

Inside the Hull hook, we have anchored on the East side of World's...

Re: Block Island to Maine

The answer is very much "It depends". South of the CCC you should be able to anchor in Block Island, outside Cuttyhunk, and in Pocasset around Basset's Island. You will certainly be able to anchor in...

Re: Block Island to Maine

The guidance about the CCC is particularly important on the way back if you're coming into a typical afternoon SW wind. If there is any gunk in your fuel tank you will find out about it pounding into...

Re: Block Island to Maine

With three weeks to do the round trip and enjoy Maine, I would recommend doing the jump overnight from P'town to your primary cruising ground. Follow Scott's guidance and get a fair tide through the...

Re: Block Island to Maine

We used to make the trip from Boston to Maine frequently. We are now doing more of our sailing south of the Cape Cod Canal, but I'm happy to help. It's a wonderful trip. In addition to PortClydeMe's...

Re: Day Charter Options in Sydney?

I'm trying to get all four of us on the water so racing probably won't work. Many thanks, though.

Day Charter Options in Sydney?

Greetings,
My wife and I are headed to Sydney in January to visit our son and daughter-in-law who are there on a two year assignment. We thought it would be great to get out on the water and sail. ...

Re: US East Coast must see stops

For those coming up Narragansett Bay to Bristol, +1 that the Herreshoff Museum is a "must see". The brilliance of Cap'n Nat is on full display.

If you're up this way and are a WWII buff, don't...

Re: Dive-planing with dolphins youtube video

I don't know about recent beach closures, but there are lots of great whites feeding on the grey seal population off Chatham at the southeast end of Cape Cod. It wouldn't put me off swimming or dive...

Re: Cruising Narragansett Bay at end of May

Hoehn000 gave you a good set of options to check out. Jamestown (Conanicut Island) has good harbors on the East and West sides. The West side is Dutch Harbor which is one of our favorite anchorages....

Re: BOat Broker in Rhode Island Massachusetts Area

Even though they are small states, MA/RI covers a lot of waterfront. There are reasonable choices of brokers. Having someone who is based near the boat is likely to result in their being better able...

Re: Milwaukee 0721 angle drill

We use the Milwaukee drill to hoist the main. It was a great addition to the boat. I agree with the comments that the weight is a relative non-issue since it will sit well in the winch -- especially...

Re: Maine to Chesapeake Bay in May

This was the admiral when we brought our boat from Salem, MA to Bristol, RI in mid-May. Temp in the low 40's. NE winds 15-30, spitting rain.

As someone once said, there is no such thing as bad...

Re: Maine to Chesapeake Bay in May

+1 on congrats on the new boat and dress warmly. May is late nor'easter time in New England. Snow is unlikely, but air temps in the 40's are common.

From Harpswell, I would jump down to MA....

Re: Graduating college, want to liveaboard in Boston

Constitution Marina is certainly the local gold standard with great access to the city. You could also check with the Hingham Shipyard Marina re: whether they permit liveaboards. The ferry to Boston...
