Re: Don't quit yet, but here some advice...

YES! THANKYOU!

Yes my original post was to offer a unique perspective from someone who doesn't fall into one of the two main catagories of people on this site:

1-the hard core proffesionals...

Re: Don't quit yet, but here some advice...

Of course I didn't mean to suggest that my one experience is the way it is for everyone. However I do think there are way more people like me than like you. People with big dreams and a little skill...

Smile Re: Don't quit yet, but here some advice...

Thanks for all the replies so far, even the negative ones. I'm just expressing my opinions so I really don't mind someone else expressing their's that I'm wrong.

I don't think some of you are...

Re: Don't quit yet, but here some advice...

ok about the girls...it was kind of joke. My point was that if you just want to have "fun" serious cruising is probably not the thing to do. Sailing is more like climbing a mountain or something,...

Don't quit yet, but here some advice...

Are you planning on taking some time off, maybe a year, maybe fovever, sail down the carribean and if things go well, cross the Panama canal and just keep going? Ya so was I, here's what I've...

Caribbean & Beyond - March 2012

Me:

- some money
- a little experience
- no boat (yet)

I am planning on buying a boat in Florida and sailing the Caribbean and S.A. (maybe farther?) end of February. As soon as everything's...

Re: SEA TOW

OK. I will admit it, mostly I was just mad at myself for not realizing what was happening. I was under the impression that the marina charged a little extra if we needed help getting the boat over...

Re: SEA TOW = Modern Day Pirates

Yes I know in the end it was my fault, but would you do a complete engine overhaul on a car when you knew it just needed the battery cable connected?

Re: SEA TOW = Modern Day Pirates

You are correct in that a little due dillegence on my part and none of that would have happened. However, the marina people (who told me it would cost $75) or the SEA TOW people could have asked a...

Sea Tow

Quick story:

I am selling my boat (hoping to buy a bigger one...) and the buyer wanted to have it hauled to inspect and clean the bottom. I wasn't sure if I would be available to move the boat...

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

"It cost whatever you have" is more of a quote about how much something will cost not how little. I merely meant to point out that a person could put off the dream forever and probably justify doing...

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

This site is all about getting out there and doing it. That's why there is such a large interest in the low dollar figures. I would rather start now on a budget of $500/month than work for 20 years...

Re: Lessons Learned After Running Aground . . .

I'm still kicking myself for not cleaning the bottom when I was aground. It would have been so much easier to stand there on the nice sand then trying to paddle around the boat.

Advice to Beginners

Because I'm a beginner (1.0001) and it's fun to give advice.

-When leaving the slip just push the boat out, don't try to drive it out. (360's in your slip are not good)

-When returning to the...

Re: The Things We Do to Make it Happen

When you're lying on your death bed looking back at your life, are you going to wish you had that $10k back or wish you would have taken the leap and set sail? That's the way I try to look at things.

Should I Power or Sail ?

I am planning to take a year off and cruise around the Caribbean. I currently have a Catalina 27' sailboat and am learning the sailing thing but I'm not sure I want to stick with it. Either way I'm...

Re: Poll: Which Fender Camp Are You In?

If you don't use fenders when docking when would you use them? Fenders on your dock instead of the boat might be a good idea. Of course if your dock gives as much as mine you don't really need...

Re: Lessons Learned after Running Aground ...

Danforth anchor. Was quite surprised how well it held.

I also think running the prop in reverse blew some of the sand away. The water was pretty turbulent when in gear.

Never really noticed...

Re: Bad day or dream sunk?

So I might be the worst sailor out there, but I am out there. Tried to make the trip again. Got close, ran aground, got free, then all hell broke loose.

Lessons Learned After Running Aground . . .

Here's a few things I learned after going aground yesterday.

- Spend the extra time to make sure you don't run aground, it's worth it. Think twice act once.

- Act slow, only go as fast as the...

Re: What ever happened to learn by doing???? Read a book and go for it

I prefer trial and error too, but sometimes it's handy to have someone point out when in error. I took ASA 101 but have been learning the old fashion way ever since. Just didn't want to kill myself...

Re: Bad day or dream sunk?

Great responses all around. However I was also wondering how common this was. Not getting sick so much as, difficult passages in general. Are we talking a few times a year, or every other trip? ...

Re: Bad day or dream sunk?

Thanks for the encouragement. After thinking about it more, the water really was rough. Strait line waves one after the other a boat length apart, and I was trying to sail directly against them.

Bad Day or Dream Sunk ?

The dream:

-save money
-practice sailing
-buy better boat
-sail Caribbean and beyond (around the world?)

Yesterday:

I planned to anchor in Shamrock cove on the other side of Corpus...
