Re: Tacking under mainsail alone
There are many factors at play. My F-31 will tack beautifully on main alone unless fitted with an oversize(high roach)main in which case not so much. What is the condition of your sail? If too much... |

Re: Converting from Sail to Power
Perhaps the obstacle is more easily understood if approached from a different perspective. The force driving a sailboat is applied at the center of effort of the sail plan, the hulls are designed to... |

Re: Outboard fuel deteriorating how long
For me avoiding the ethanol blend is not practical. I have started using a marine stabilizer and can get about 3 mos storage while just 1 mo without. This is in the Florida Keys with a new Yamaha... |

Re: Modernising a Horstman Trimaran
To add to what Cav said, Tristar hulls are full by more modern standards at about 8 1/2:1 which hampers there speed but allows them to perform in a wider range of conditions while carrying a cruising... |

Re: Modernising a Horstman Trimaran
As the thread has drifted a bit I would like to say to the OP that I have the greatest respect for Ed and his designs and would be very hesitant to change anything. Dave |

Re: Older Horstman Trimaran
Mike, My F-31 does 110% of wind speed with a main hull / beam ratio of about 11:1. The Tristars are about 8- 8 1/2:1 and I would guess about 60% of wind speed. That is long on guess but similar to... |

Re: Do you use Nautical Terms or Plain Language?
Most of my sailing is with inexperienced crew so I'm basically single handing. It is nice to have help on the tiller and makes the crew feel useful. I run into problems with "fall off" and "head... |

Re: Simple Lightning Protection Idea?
I believe a strike is initiated by a streamer coming up from the earth, this is supported by research done at the U of Fl. I isolate my boats from ground to prevent the relatively low potential... |

Re: Can you trailer a multihull coastal cruiser
Tomfl, When I decided on a 31 I knew what I wanted,98 or older aft cockpit. A broker found one for me and I paid about $10000 too much but got the exact boat I wanted and have never regreted it.... |

Re: Can you trailer a multihull coastal cruiser
[QUOTE=cat man do;934483]$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ makes it pretty prohibitive for many Proven design, modern materials and construction methods with plenty of used boats for less than $100,000. I'll... |

Re: Can you trailer a multihull coastal cruiser
It's pretty tough to beat an F-31.Standing headroom, double berth and enclosed head. Mine only comes out of the water once in a while but it takes about an hour to drop the sails and lower the mast... |

Ocean Girl, My V berth is 90 inches long(71/2ft) with 42 inches at the shoulders and 16inches at your feet. I'm a small guy at 5ft 10in. and 152lbs but my girlfriend is not small and there is... |

Re: Trailerable Trimarans
This is another plug for the F-31 but in my case the aft cockpit model is preferable having a more usable cabin for cruising, a more useable V berth and a more functional head. Access to the outboard... |

Re: 38ft Trimaran - Too Much to Fix ?
Is this Green Cove Springs, Fl? There aren't a lot of these around, does it happen to have a fixed keel in place of the twin daggerboards? The twin daggers are at the heart of Ed Horstman's design... |

Re: Carbon or aluminium mast?
I am in the process of replacing the unstayed Al masts on my Sea Pearl with carbon fiber from Forte. My motivation is weight aloft and roll moment. Cost is 4x and weight is 1/2. I would not make the... |

Re: Gemini or Maine Cat 30?
Canibul, You are absolutely right, you are too big for the F-31. At 5'10 and 160 the world looks quite differant to me. Dave |

Re: 'Banque Populaire V' Rewriting the Record Book
Certainly an amazing vessel and crew. The scale is astounding and from the videos of the instruments seems to do 150% of true wind speed. I wonder what the cost of such a boat ready to sail would... |

Re: Gemini or Maine Cat 30?
Forgive me for mudding the waters but would you consider a Corsair 31 trimaran? The aft cockpit model has a minimal but adequate cabin and the sailing performance is unrivaled by anything else you... |

Re: Will a High Speed Prop Work on a Sailboat ?
It's not just a question of performance but premature engine failure. If the engine is so overproped as to not be able to rev to full rpm then the engine is being lugged down and exhaust gas... |

Re: Tri or Cat
It's important to remember that, be it cat or tri, the righting moment is greatest if the weight is kept along the port/stb centerline. Probably easier in a tri and though some of the classic designs... |
